About Milestone Names
From time-to-time, we may find it useful to give codenames to important projects or deadlines, particularly when multiple features, teams, and/or workstreams are involved.
Not every sprint, project, or release requires a codename, but for those that do, we use names drawn from William Henry Jackson’s 1860 map of the Pony Express mail route.
There are 6 cities and 135 mail stations along the route that milestones may be named after.
- City names should be reserved for major milestones (one or two per quarter).
- Mail station names may be used for more incremental milestones.
Generally milestones follow an east-to-west sequence, such that our first major milestone is St. Joseph, our second major milestone is Ft Kearny, and minor interim milestones might be Elwood, Troy, Kennekuk, and so on.
