Weekly Dispatch 20

Hey everyone,

I want to start out by saying how awesome everything felt as we closed out the week last week. We were able to come together as a team and collectively come up with new processes that will help us hone ideas, make decisions, and effectively execute on solutions. All of that is because as a group we weren't afraid to speak up and call attention to things that might not have been working—something we should always strive to do.

As we add more people to the team in the coming months, finding the right cadence for our meetings, our processes, and how we communicate in general, is going to be critical. We will find some inefficiencies along the way, as well as some insights, and calling things out—both the good and the bad—will be our ticket to improving and sustaining our work and culture.

With at least two (and hopefully more) people joining us in November and December, it would be good to place some attention and focus to our WIP: XMTP Values this week to hone things further.

NFT.NYC

Next week is the NFT.NYC conference, and what will be our first public reveal of what we're up to. Throughout this week we'll be working on our messaging, presentation, and hone in on exactly what we want to put out to the community at this time. It's no doubt going to be an exciting time, and will be an excellent opportunity to start getting some external opinions!

Let's get at it this week! 🚀

Last week goals

Oct 18-22nd

  • Share expected product deliverable for Nov 1st
  • Decide on what we want to show at NFT NYC
  • Invite partners, investors, and developers to NFT NYC (ongoing)
  • Decide on internal partners on network growth plan

This week goals

Oct 25-29th

  • Prepare and finalize presentation for NFT NYC
  • Discuss Public / Private relay architecture idea
  • Transition Community Discourse to .org and get it ready for new users

XMTP Updates

  • Graham has signed on to be our Minister of the Memetic Arts!
    • He'll also be joining us in NYC next week
  • As a team we discussed having some frameworks for how we move ideas along, and execute on projects. They've been dropped in the Handbook.
  • We're moving away from daily standups (Discussion)
  • @shanemac pulled a rabbit out of a hat and had a great chat with Google Cloud engineer extraordinaire Kelsey Hightower
  • As a group we decided on our in-person get-togethers (at least for now)
    • End of January, May, and September
  • Props to @petermdenton for starting out a doc on use cases, how they map to potential partners, and our priority when working on them

Crypto industry news

  • Both Bitcoin and Ethereum hit all time highs this week! ($64,900 and $4,308 respectively)
  • The first official Bitcoin ETF, ProShares' "BITO" launched to a historic $1B debut (Link)
  • NFT-based collectible card game called Parallel is launching (Link)

What we are reading/listening to

  • Just finished reading Neil Stephenson's Cryptonomicon, which 22 years old but shares so many modern themes with what's going on in web3 and tech these days
    • Some really fun deep dives on crypto systems and encrypted communication
  • Bankless interview with Hop Protocol on L2's, side chains, and bridging between them (Link)

A week in the life with @shanemac

A week in Mexico photo dump. I haven’t taken a vacation where I truly just checked out in a long time. It was great.
