Nick Molnar
Hi, I'm Nick
About Me
What will you be doing at XMTP?
Whatever needs to get done. Probably helping out with the node/backend to start.
Where are you currently based?
Vancouver, BC What’s your primary time zone? UTC–08:00 (PT), although I prefer working something closer to East Coast hours.
Where did you grow up?
I was born a 10 minute walk from where I live right now. Although I went to University in Montreal, lived in Seattle for a year, and LA for 3 as an adult.
What does your household look like?
I moved an old friend into my guest room during the pandemic. That’s been great. We both have girlfriends who are around a bunch. No pets…for now.

Me at the Fraser Canyon last summer
What keeps you energized?
Getting out into nature. I live next to Stanley Park and try and go for at least a short walk in the park every day it’s not pouring rain. The cell service is good, so any Zooms that don’t require a laptop I try and take there too.
Work preferences
Where on the spectrum of introvert to extrovert would you place yourself?
Somewhere in the middle
What’s your preferred way to receive feedback, in terms of speed?
As soon as it can be articulated clearly
What’s your preferred way to receive feedback, in terms of format?
Face to face and in writing. The face to face communication is helpful for delivering tone, but I also like to be able to go back and re-read things so I can make sure I fully understand it. For highly specific technical feedback, written-only works best.
What’s your orientation toward conflict?
Doing conflict well is a skill that teams develop over time. Once you get to the point where people learn not to be defensive, it can be very constructive. Still, at some point you have to know when to disagree and commit.
What time(s) of day are you most productive?
Early morning. I’ve been working something closer to East Coast startup time for the past 6 months and it’s been great.
What do you value more than anything else?
Trustworthiness
What’s your biggest work-related pet peeves?
Hurry-up-and-wait. Time is the scarcest resource we have, and should be treated as such.
Runner-up is meetings without a clear agenda shared beforehand.
What does ‘work-life balance’ mean to you?
Control over my daily schedule. Being able to go for a walk if I need fresh air.
Anything else you’d like to share about what makes for your ideal work environment?
Lots of focus time, punctuated with extremely high density meetings.
What’s your favorite way to decompress after work?
A game of Cornhole. It’s got all the benefits of golf, but doesn’t require hundreds of acres, expensive equipment, or unsustainable water usage.
