About Me

What will you be doing at XMTP?

I'll be focused on the software development side of the team. I naturally gravitate towards filling in the 'gaps' so will likely wear many hats, but coming from a background in Networks/Security I imagine i'll start there.

Where are you currently based?

Vancouver, BC

What’s your primary time zone?

UTC–08:00 (PT).

Where did you grow up?

My father was in the Canadian Military, so I moved every 2-3 years. Mostly the west and east coasts, with sometime in Germany. To this day Halifax, NS still feels the most home like.

What does your household look like?

Currently just my Fiancee Leslie and I, but we have hopes of adding a puppy or two soon.

What keeps you energized?

Creating tangibles. Whether is woodworking, electronics, or just generally making, I find tremendous amounts of energy in seeing artifacts in this world come into existence. Witnessing the product of time and effort (Regardless of how beautiful, silly, or meaningless it may be) reminds me of the impacts we can have in our environments

Work preferences

Where on the spectrum of introvert to extrovert would you place yourself?

44% Extroverted over time domain -- periods of one then the other.

What’s your preferred way to receive feedback, in terms of speed?

Early, often, consistently. Adopting the mantra of relentless improvement I enjoy feedback as a iterative process/ritual.

  • Every day/moment/meeting :: how could it be 2% better (Immediate small improvements)
  • Weekly/Monthly/Quarterly what are some larger areas for change -- How can I better make progress towards my goals and desired effect.

If something arises that is neither small nor can wait until structured time, I'd love to get a quick pre-read along with a calendar invite so we can discuss. I'm not perfect, but I want to be better than I am today.

What’s your preferred way to receive feedback, in terms of format?

  1. Feedback is a gift, and I'm grateful for however it comes to me.

  2. For substantial discussions I think a pre-read along with a face-to-face discussion is a great approach.

What’s your orientation toward conflict?

When it comes to actual conflict, I naturally tend more towards being less assertive (Accommodating/Yielding). I know this is not always helpful, but lets call it a work in progress.

I am however quite comfortable in disagreement. I don't have all the answers, and very happy to dig in and see where our assumptions/goals are not aligned. This is where I learn the most.

What time(s) of day are you most productive?

Traditionally later in the day. Once the inboxes/distractions have be addressed and I can slip into flow.

What do you value more than anything else?

  • Honesty -- because its difficult.
  • Trust -- because it is fragile.

When things go unsaid -- Though I acknowledge this more of an issue with more junior teams. There are many challenges ahead of us, and we need all the help we can get.

Contender: False Harmony

What does ‘work-life balance’ mean to you?

To me it's about finding a way that both can assist me on my journey, rather than negatively impacting progress.

Anything else you’d like to share about what makes for your ideal work environment?

Respect, Honesty, and Trust.

What’s your favorite way to decompress after work?

Flying Kites, Tinkering, or a cold beer by the ocean.
